Mistrial Doesn't End Legal Woes for Menendez

A federal judge declared a mistrial in the corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, giving the Democrat a political lifeline and preserving his party’s control of the seat for the near future.

Judge William Walls ’ action came Thursday after a jury said it couldn’t reach a verdict in the case against the 63-year-old New Jersey senator accused of a yearslong bribery scheme involving nearly $1 million in contributions and gifts from Salomon Melgen, a Florida eye doctor. Dr. Melgen was Mr. Menendez’s co-defendant in the trial.

The Justice Department said it would “carefully consider next steps” and let the court know if it would retry the case.
