Visa overstays now biggest illegal immigration problem

A new report released Monday suggests the illegal immigration problem has shifted away from people sneaking into the United States, and towards those who came legally but refused to leave the county when their visa expired.

While it’s difficult to know exact flows, currently for every illegal immigrant nabbed at the border, another one gets through. That means that fewer than 500,000 new illegal immigrants a year have snuck into the United States.

Illegal overstays easily top that number now.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released today the Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 Entry/Exit Overstay Report. The report provides data on departures and overstays, by country, for foreign visitors to the United States who entered as nonimmigrant visitors through an air or sea Port of Entry (POE) and were expected to depart in FY16.
