What we've learned so far about Donald Trump Jr's Russia emails

President Donald Trump's eldest son has acknowledged that he met a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign to hear information about his father's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Trump Jr. eagerly accepted help from what was described to him as a Russian government effort to aid his father's campaign with damaging information about Hillary Clinton, according to emails he released publicly on Tuesday.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders reads a brief statement from the President Tuesday supporting his eldest son in response to revelations that Trump Jr. agreed to hear damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Trump Jr. released the entire email chain via Twitter:

So here's what we've learned so far:

1. Donald Trump Jr. was conducting an investigation to discover whether Hillary Clinton was receiving illegal campaign contributions from the Russians.

2. Trump Jr. concluded that she didn't receive any illegal Russian contributions, at least not from Ms. Veselnitskaya.

3. There was no "meeting" between Trump, Jr. and "the Russians."Donald Trump Jr. was invited to a meeting with Rob Goldstone who said that a Russian lawyer with documents proving that Russians were funding Hillary Clinton's campaign would be there.

This is the way a professional investigation should be done. It is certainly better than anything Comey ever came up with.

Trump Jr. portrayed his meeting as a "short introductory meeting."

"It was a short introductory meeting. I asked Jared and Paul to stop by.

"We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government, but it was not a campaign issue at the time and there was no follow up," Trump Jr. said.

Trump Jr. released another statement to further explain his meeting:

"I was asked to have a meeting by an acquaintance I knew from the 2013 Miss Universe pageant with an individual who I was told might have information helpful to the campaign. I was not told her name prior to the meeting. I asked Jared and Paul to attend, but told them nothing of the substance.

"After pleasantries were exchanged, the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered.

"It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information. She then changed subjects and began discussing the adoption of Russian children and mentioned the Magnitsky Act.

"It became clear to me that this was the true agenda all along and that the claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting."

So, the younger Trump received an email on June 3, 2016 from a British publicist saying that a top Russian prosecutor had “offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.”

Too bad they didn't have the goods on Hillary Clinton. We'll probably never know how much Putin paid her off to sell our uranium mines to Rosatom. We do know about the $500,000 the Russians paid to Bill Clinton, and the $124 million they paid to the Clinton Foundation. But how much did they pay to Hillary?

It looks like Donald Trump, Jr. was the party wronged. He was invited to a meeting under false pretenses and did the right thing by terminating the meeting once he discerned its true purpose.

Trump Jr. was naive to do this meeting on his own. But he was baited into believing that he would be shown documents of illegal campaign contributions from Russia to the DNC.

That's a bit different from engaging in a calculated conspiracy with Russia to sabotage the election. Remember this was a guy who was naive about political campaigning. Trump Jr. was playing out of his league on this one incident, but was not weaving a deep web with the Russians to coordinate a take town of Hillary Clinton.

I would like to remind everyone that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have both been linked to the Russians.

According to CNN, former President Obama and Hillary Clinton have been linked to Russian plots to subvert Ukraine's elections in favor of pro-Russian candidates:

"One of Washington's most powerful lobbying firms did not disclose the wide extent of its lucrative political work for a Ukrainian group tied to both onetime Trump adviser Paul Manafort and to pro-Russian politicians, new records show.

"The firm, the Podesta Group, said nothing in a 2012 lobbying report to Congress about at least 32 meetings, emails and other communications it had with the State Department, at a time when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was scrutinizing Ukraine's upcoming election, records show. The new disclosures shed light on the web of contacts between Russian-leaning Ukrainians, Washington lobbyists and U.S. policymakers during the Obama administration."

The progressives and leftist legacy media need to wake up to the gross damage they are doing to the country with the venomous way they are pursuing Trump and his administration. Yes, the enemy is Russia, but not collusion. By focusing on collusion they are doing the Russians’ bidding with all of the vitriol they spout that is poisoning many Americans.

On March 30 six worried experts on how the Russian misinformation and disinformation campaigns have been working testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee. They spoke of and illustrated how the Russians do it by capitalizing on the current polarization to make it far worse than it already was.

Even worse, the leftist media, and, by their rather unique vitriol and the prominence TV gives them, particularly CNN and MSNBC, have fallen for it lock, stock and barrel, and are carrying water for the Russians.

One thing that struck me of those hearings was how one of the experts rued about how when they finished their testimony that day all of it would be forgotten and Congress and the media would go back to their ways.
