I am fine with Cruz or Trump: Do you really want Hillary or Bernie?

Our Founding Fathers feared a government that could compromise our liberties and settled for one with strictly limited powers and many checks on those powers that would protect us from the tyranny of an aristocracy or of the majority.

Thus, after their initial experimentation in ‘republican’ or democratic rule [the Articles of Confederation], the founders devised a new scheme in which an electorate of ‘the People’ by voting in elections would exercise, not a lawmaking power, but the power to check the lawmakers. ‘We the People’ would not rule directly, but an electorate reflecting the rights and interests of the people would have the effective power to check those who would issue commands to the people.

By the same token, the state governments would have the power to check federal legislation through Senators chosen by state legislatures.
