The University of Oklahoma student government recently rejected a resolution congratulating the school’s sports teams, after they became concerned the term “Boomer Sooner” may be offensive to American Indian students.
Student Government President Daniel Pae said he did not believe in a "top-down mandate" to remove the word "sooner."
“This is not a new issue. My position is that this is something that should be discussed at the individual and organizational level,” Pae said.
Idigenize OU, a student group that advocates for Native Americans, praised the student government for voting against the resolution because it contained the phrase "Boomer Sooner."
"Indigenize OU would like to express our appreciation to SGA for their brave and just decision yesterday.
"We think it is a major step in the right direction for non-natives to see “Boomer” and “Sooner” as problematic language with real and violent consequences. We would like to also remind everyone that our only role in this matter was initiating discussion on the problematic history, context, and usage of the terms “Boomer” and “Sooner.”
