On July 4th 1776, our country declared freedom from a tyrannical monarchy. After years of fighting against an enormous military force with nothing more than minimal supplies and a yearning for freedom, the patriots who founded our nation, successfully overcame all odds and defeated the British. Since that time many patriots have also lost their lives protecting the freedoms we often take for granted.
What was achieved? Those Patriots achieved Individual liberty and a government of the people. A way of governing in which the individual was to control government, and not the other way around with a system of checks and balances put in place to ensure it never changes.
Today, we have people in this nation constantly calling for our liberty and freedoms to be limited and squelched under the guise of the "greater good".
Though the fight is somewhat different today, we are constantly "fighting" our own in government to maintain our freedoms and liberties. This fight is, and should be, with open debate, facts and an adherence to the constitution. Not the will of politicians or judges or another who attempt to subvert the constitution for personal gain.
So, today, as you spend time with your family and friends, and the grill is hot and the beer is cold. Take a moment to remember why you have the freedom to enjoy such an amazing day. Remember those who gave their lives, literally and metaphorically, to protect those freedoms.
Remember, as you are lighting fireworks, or throwing water balloons, remember the amazing words that were written after many debates to secure your liberty as a citizen. Today, be a Patriot, not just remember them.
Now, help me finish this to the end as they day goes on through comments below:
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union,"
